The famous haunted fort in Rajasthan known as Bhangarh Fort was built by Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh in 17th century. It is located on the border of Sariska Reserve in the Aravali Range of hills in Alwar district. The fort is sited at the foot of the hills on sloping terrain. The remain of the King’s palace are situated on the lower slope of the hills, surrounded with trees, ponds and a stream fall within the location of palace. The fort and its areas are well preserved.

Now, there is a big question, why Bhangarh fort is known as Haunted fort?

So, there are two different stories of Bhangarh Fort for being called as Haunted fort.

Story of Witch

The wizard who was expert in Black Magic, he fell in love with princess of Bhangarh Ratnavati. She was very gorgeous and had proposal to marry her from many Royal families of the other countries. One day princess Ratnavati, went for a shopping with her friends for buying an Ittar (Scent). The Wizard saw her buying Ittar and replaced the scent with a love potion. He offered the potion to her so that she would started liking to him and marry him. Meanwhile, the princess Ratnavati sensed the wizard’s trick. When he offered her the bowl of potion, she threw that bowl of potion into a big boulder (Rock) nearby. As a result, the rock started rolling down to the wizard and crushed him.

Before the wizard died, he made a curse that Bhangarh would be destroyed soon and no one would be able to live within this area. Fortunately, Bhangarh Fort was occupied by the Mughals from the north and the city was surrounded and preserved. Around 10,000 people lived in the city of fort. All the people in the fort, with the princess Ratnavati, were killed. The present state of the Bhangarh fort is attributed to the curse of the wizard and the people believe that the ghost in the fort are of princess Ratnavati and the wizard.


Villagers believed that, princess will born-again and if she visits the fort, the swearword of the wizard will break down.

Story of Sadhu

As legends says, Baba Balu Nath he was a sadhu he was living near to fort area and avowed that “if any house will be built nearby this area of the fort should not be taller than his house and if the shadow of any such house fell on his house than it’s result would be destruction of the entire town in fort.”
